Monodraw App Reviews
Ive spent so much time manually creating ASCII art diagrams for in-line documentation in code and markdown docs. Doing it by hand is laborious and making changes is often even more time consuming. This app makes it so much easier. Jumping right in, the interface is pretty intuitive. A few features I thought were missing (arbitrary line attachment points, keyboard shortcuts) are actually there and, as it turns out, shown in the Intro Document examples. So thats worth checking out: Help menu > Open Intro Document...
The functionality is perfect and well thought out. Design simple and straight forward flows is simple and easy to throw in a web page or in documentation. It’s just a rather sweet app with a bright future ahead of it; it’s well worth the small investment for this kind of functionality. I wish there was support for colors though. I would like to see the ability to convert an image to “ascii art” to include in a chart as well and the ability to save individual components to a “library” to share amongst projects.
It saved me dozens of hours to create the message of today file, /etc/motd. It has a build-in figlet program, and has dozens of fonts of figlet. Really cool.
It’s great for retro-style documentation illustrations, a lot of fun and very professionally done. Excellent work and all functions are immediately discoverable. Go for the next Apple Design Awards ;)
Inspiring!
This is insipring, easy and great :)
I was looking for an inexpensive tool for Flow Charting amd stumbled across MonoDraw that I affectionally call MoonDraw! You can drag some basic shapes, add text and connect them using point to point lines. The best part is that Mono Draw handles everything in a cool text flavored graphic style so it is easy to edit and copy/paste to other apps. I was surprised that there was no PRINT option in the app, but for a 1.0 app it is great. I look forward to doing some great text editing. Would be cool to see if the developers could link TextSoap, PopClip to make it even easier to get in and out with MonoDraw text enhancements.
This is a great tool to insert drawings into code comments. Comes with export options for different comment types and other configurations to embed in code. Much better than inserting an image into projects and hoping other devs will take the time to look at them. Also makes it easier to update.
Dream come true
I wish I could give this 5 billion stars. Finally we can abandon the weak link between source code and out-of-band documentation. Never again will I have to ask “where is the system diagram?” because it will be right there in front of my face in the comments of the source code.
Awesome
I use this app regularly for diagramming system architecture, data structures, etc in source code. It works really, really well. I love it!
Not functional on macOS Monterey 12.7
“Monodraw” is damaged and can’t be opened. Delete “Monodraw” and download it again from the App Store. [Delete app] [Download from app store] [Repeats...]
Pretty good
Works fairly well. Would be nice to have an option to inverse font and background color. Makes pure text websites much easier, I used to do this all by hand in sublime text and it was a pain.
Does what its says!
A treat to use. Monodraw is an outstanding example of software at the service of the user. Unassuming, effective, uncluttered, Monodraw is a rare gem. It helps visual thinkers without burdening their attention. An excellent choice to add diagrams along with code comments, and just as good to insert simple visuals into text notes. Kudos to the developers!
Phenomenal
Maybe my best purchase yet. Invaluable for diagramming, showing relations in code comments, etc. The PNG/SVG output is icing on the cake for smacking something on the web. Great software. Intuitive. Practical.
Text as Objects! Brilliant reifying!
Having done ascii drawings since the 1980's, this is a huge productivity booster, especially with the modern software development toolchains. Being able to whip up an ascii drawing to help self document algorithm code will make my future self happy not to mention others. Markdown docs will be easier for others to comprehend with concrete ascii diagrams.
One of very few favorite apps
Very usefull to make docs for my architecture and code! Many thanks!
I love this App
been developing software for varios operting system for years...I love this app, powerful and simple. I can describe anything I like with it!
Love it! Really fun and useful
If you've ever wanted the computer to work a little bit more like it was a typewriter and a piece of paper you can write on anywhere... this is it. ASCII art is awesome, but my main goal was a brain-friendly, uncomplicated diagramming tool and this works great. Think design/development environments... easy to copy a selection into another app to save in your Markdown or HTML files elsewhere. Love it! Thanks to the developers for the M1 version.
I Love MonoDraw
Super easy to pick up. I work in Software and Monodraw make it super easy for me to create any diagram that I need.
Essential
This application is fantastic as a diagraming tool and an art application, once you get it, you'll wonder how you ever lived without it. The only negative is that it isn't available on Linux nor Windows, now I feel forced to use Mac OS only so I can enjoy using it.
Wonderfully flexible and capable
Very useful especially for documentation in source controlled documenation. This is one of the few tools that make me like making documenation.
Fantastic for comments, documents, etc.
Monodraw is the perfect tool for creating graphics in traditionally text-only contexts. I use it when writing documentation where I need to include diagrams, but the documentation must be embedded in a programming source file, or a Markdown document, both of which only support text.
Simple yet elegant
This has made it 100x easier to insert graphical descriptions in code comments for compex graph database objects. Thanks for the easy-to-use interface. I am particularly pleased with how zippy it is now that you have a native M1 build. Thanks again!
Fantastic Programming Tool
The app deserves a lot of love. It is amazingly simple to use. I use it for documenting programming code. When I am writing code for graphical objects, I can create little explanatory "pictures" as comments in the code itself or in text notes that my IDE allows. It seems a little whimsical and it could be used in that way to create retro computer art, but I use it for a very practical purpose. Worth every penny.
Awesome
It's very compatible when all you need is something to demo ideas as a developer, since you can simply save it in markdown or text file.
Should be rated 5.0 out of 5
Great tool for creating text-based documentation. Easy to use, good interface.
Excellent software
This is excellent and innovative software that works as advertised.
Loving it
This tool is great for software developers, product managers, and tech folks to write documentation and throw simple diagrams into release notes. I am really enjoying the tool. Feature rich and easy to use. Bravo.
At a loss for words -- Fabulous
This is one of the greatest software applications ever. It is just fabulous. The more I use it, the more I love it. I'm at a loss for words.
Overjoyed Factory Gamer
I am a big fan of videogames like Factorio and Satisfactory. These are games that are about resource collection/management in the form of building large factories to automate resource production and refinement. I grabbed Monodraw to provide me with a tool to plan out and theorize more efficient automated systems in my factories. The features allowing me to group together production lines, and copy and past them for duplication has allowed me to plan out basic systems that I can copy then paste to quickly create more complex systems made of of multiple basic systems. I judge software largely on the basis of how seamless it feels to use. At no point in my planning have I felt like my planning is slowed down by needing to learn how to use Monodraw. The interface is very intuitive and doesn't "get in your way." If I were to have one complaint/request. At this time I cannot seem to zoomout any further than 75%. This is not a huge issue, but would be nice for being able to see the entirety of a designed system without needing to pan around.
Perfect for programmer needs
Great app. Enough layout flexibility to suit my needs for flowcharting and documentation. Export to SVG and text copy and past to comments in source code is terrific.
How is this not rated higher?
This application is fantastic!
This application is absolutely awesome
It saved me dozens of hours to create the message of today file, /etc/motd. It has a build-in figlet program, and has dozens of fonts of figlet. Really cool.
An absolutely gorgeous app with a brilliant design

Makes adding a diagram to your code or README.md so much easier
I've spent so much time manually creating ASCII art diagrams for in-line documentation in code and markdown docs. Doing it by hand is laborious and making changes is often even more time consuming. FANTASTIC - Works great for Flow Charting too!

Excellent for simple wiring diagrams
I use this at home to make simple wiring diagrams for the home theater, home network, base electrical, etc. I love that I can save the drawings as text to dropbox and open them in any text editor on any machine. Lines have a variety of ends (including arrows) available. They also can be attached to objects so they will move with the object. For shapes, you’re basically limited to rectangles with a few choices for different borders. Think of this app as an inexpensive and limited version of Visio that can save to plaintext format. It’s unique and very well implemented.
